New Education Policy Sparks Debate on Library Funding in Public Schools

A recently proposed education policy has sparked nationwide discussions on the role of libraries in public schools and the need for increased funding to improve literacy resources. The policy, which aims to revamp the education sector, includes a controversial clause that reallocates library budgets toward digital learning tools—a move that has drawn mixed reactions from educators, literacy advocates, and policymakers.

A Shift Toward Digital Learning?

The proposed policy suggests that a significant portion of school library funds be redirected toward digital learning platforms, tablets, and online education tools. Supporters argue that this change will modernize education and prepare students for a tech-driven world.

“Students today learn differently,” said Dr. Ibrahim Musa, an education policy analyst. “Investing in e-learning tools will ensure they have access to dynamic, interactive resources rather than relying solely on traditional textbooks.”

However, critics worry that neglecting physical libraries could worsen literacy gaps, especially in rural and low-income areas where students lack access to technology.

The Need for Balance

Library advocates argue that while digital learning is important, physical books and libraries remain essential for developing strong literacy skills.

“A screen cannot replace the feeling of holding a book, flipping through its pages, and engaging deeply with text,” said Ngozi Chukwuma, a literacy campaigner. “We should be expanding libraries, not cutting their funding.”

Some experts suggest a hybrid approach—investing in both physical and digital resources—to ensure that no student is left behind.

What This Means for Schools & Communities

If the policy is passed, schools may have to adjust their budgets and seek alternative sources of funding for books and library maintenance. Some communities are already mobilizing to push for amendments that protect library funding.
