JOF Library Launches “Read with a Friend” Program to Promote Peer Learning

In an effort to make reading more engaging and accessible, JOF Library has launched the “Read with a Friend” program, an initiative that encourages children and young adults to form reading pairs or small groups to support each other’s literacy development. The program is designed to make reading fun, social, and interactive, especially for those who struggle with reading alone.

Why Peer Reading Matters

Studies have shown that reading with a peer can significantly improve comprehension, confidence, and retention of information. However, in many communities, reading is often seen as a solitary or school-only activity.

“Children learn better when they read together and discuss what they’ve read,” said Grace Okechukwu, a literacy coach at JOF Library. “This initiative creates a supportive environment where they can build confidence, improve fluency, and develop a love for books.”

How “Read with a Friend” Works

📖 Pair & Share – Participants are paired with a reading buddy or placed in small groups based on age and reading level.

📚 Weekly Reading Challenges – Buddies choose a book to read together each week and complete fun challenges like storytelling, role-playing, and book discussions.

🎤 Group Discussions & Storytelling – Every weekend, participants meet at JOF Library (or online) to share insights, favorite moments, and lessons from their books.

🏆 Rewards & Recognition – Readers who complete challenges earn stickers, bookmarks, and free books to encourage continued participation.

Impact on the Community

Since launching, the program has already helped struggling readers improve their confidence and encouraged children who previously had little interest in books to start reading regularly.

“I used to find reading boring, but now I look forward to reading with my friend every week,” said 12-year-old Emmanuel Okoro, one of the program’s early participants. “We even act out parts of the stories, which makes it fun!”

Parents and teachers have also welcomed the initiative, noting improvements in reading fluency and comprehension among participating children.
